Fourth and Fifth Grade Program
New Instruments offered! Viola, Cello, Violin and Bass are offered as part of the 4th grade program. Students can continue on violin or choose a new string instrument. Instruments are all quite similar, so transitioning is often seamless for students who want to switch. Lessons will focus on instrument specific skills and Orchestra will focus on ensemble skills.
Method book/ Curriculum: Students will continue to use Essential Elements book 1, but most of their practicing will be orchestra repertoire and concert pieces, which I will distribute in lessons.
About/Expectations: Students will have one 25-30 minute violin, viola, or cello lesson each week as well as 30 min orchestra rehearsal. They expected to be at each every week, unless they are absent from school. There will be a lesson schedule posted in the classroom showing which the class or group goes for lessons. Classroom teachers will do their best to remind students in class, but it is the child’s job to be listening and make sure they hear when the lesson is going to be. In 4th and 5th grade, students should be more responsible for checking the schedule on their own and walking themselves to lessons. Please take note of the DAY of the week your child needs their instrument. This will differ according to school.
Practicing: Please encourage and remind your child to practice! They will have a practicing assignment each week which will be covered in lessons. Recommendation for practicing time is at least 1 hour a week! Broken down, thats 15 min/ 3-4 days a week. Improvement and progress on an instrument is strongly correlated to how much time your child spends practicing the instrument. Please support them in any way you can.
